22 tonnes: The deadly drugs stopped from reaching our shores

The taskforce is made up of AFP personnel and officials from the National Narcotics Control Commission and the Chinese Anti-Smuggling Bureau.

Current figures on just how successful Taskforce Blaze has been have been released to WAtoday to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the AFP establishing its first office in Beijing in 1999.

AFP deputy commissioner of operations Neil Gaughan said methamphetamine consumption in Australia was the second highest in the world according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

He said the taskforce had stopped more than 22 tonnes of drugs « finding their way into the veins of the Australian community ».

« The Australian community’s consumption of illicit drugs continues to be a driver for the regional production of methamphetamine and other illicit substances, and Chinese and others’ cooperation will be key to counter these efforts, » he said.
